Ai Miyazato (born 19 June 1985) is a Japanese golfer.
She won a professional event called the Dunlop Open as
an amateur in 2003. In her 2004 rookie season on the
Japan LPGA Tour she won five tournaments. In January
2005 she won the inaugural Acer World Cup of Golf for
Japan in partnership with Rui Kitada. Miyazato is
planning on competing full time on the U.S. LPGA Tour in
2006, she hopes to qualify this year. In September she
passed the first stage of qualifying school in
California. Miyazato became the youngest player on the
JLPGA Tour to win a major at 20 years following the
Japan Open Championship. Miyazato has been credited with
reviving the JLPGA Tour after the retirement of Ayako
Okamato. In September the largest gallery ever to attend
on the final day of a JLPGA event occurred at the Japan
Open Championship when over 31,000 spectators attended.
Miyazato has been the # 2 ranked player on the JLPGA
Tour the past two years behind Yuri Fudoh. She has
endorsements deals with Suntory, Bridgestone Golf, Japan
Airlines, Oakley, Paradiso & Hisamitsu.
She dominated the U.S. LPGA Q-School on December 4, 2005
and secured her tour card, enabling her to compete in
the 2006 season. She finished under par for five of the
six qualifying rounds, and finished 12 strokes ahead of
the closest competitor, setting a record for the largest
margin of victory.
